HOW TO BE A FRIEND
SOME FACTS

American Indians, on a national average:

  • have the shortest life span of any ethnic group
  • the highest infant mortality rate
  • the highest suicide rate
  • the lowest per capita income
  • the highest unemployment
  • the highest school dropout rate
  • the poorest housing
  • the most inadequate health care, with
  • extensive diabetes, tuberculosis,
    high blood pressure, respiratory
    disease, and alcoholism

Many factors account for these conditions:
  • unproductive land
  • lack of capital
  • lack of education
  • a cycle of poverty difficult to escape
  • cultural dislocation and depression
caused from an existence as a
    conquered people within an
    historically alien culture.

HOW TO BE USEFUL AND ... HOW TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

• Consider sponsoring a family.
A family can be recommended by a reservation
church. Sacred Heart Church of Pine Ridge is one. Some other reservation web sites are listed on the
Volunteerism page.

• Speak out to friends to raise their awareness about:
religious freedom / sacred sites
social justice
racial justice

• Donate to:
Habitat For Humanity for American Indians.
Pine Ridge has a charter:

Woihanble Yuwita
PO Box 3017
Pine Ridge, SD 57770

•Donate to a reservation school.

• Nag your Senators and Representatives about
saving Sacred Sites. Letters and phone calls work.

• Write to owners of sports teams who use Indian
logos, and mascots --- tell them it’s racist
and demeaning.

• Learn about mining, logging and drilling on
reservation land. If Indian people are against
it, ask if you can be of service by letter writing
or phone calls.

• Support American Indian arts and crafts. If you want
to purchase Indian-made art pieces, ask about the artist before you buy.
