VOLUNTEERISM

We get many questions about volunteering, or “How can I help?” This is a sensitive topic because we try not to enable.
Of course we do enable at times, especially when children are involved, but we always ask ourselves,
"Is this a hand-up or a hand-out"
.

We like the concept of being useful to Native people, rather than helping them. We do not place volunteers on reservations.
To volunteer for our organization you need to live near Dublin, NH. Our mission is to fight racism, raise awareness about Indian issues,
and to promote self-determination through education and job training.

Because we are volunteers, we always need donations for our projects, and annual member dues help secure our
scholarship fund. We give $2500.00 annually to college-bound Indian students. We would welcome your membership.
It is only $20.00 and with joining you will receive our annual newsletter.

There are many ways you can make a
,,,,,,difference without working on a reservation.

You can be a Friend by working on one of several issues. For example:

  • There are many sacred sites in jeopardy. One, the National Petroglyph Monument in New Mexico, is threatened by a proposed highway that will go through the northern part of the monument. You could gather your family and friends to launch a letter campaign. Send the letters to your representatives

  • Sponsor a family from a reservation. Contact your church and ask for help or choose a tribe and contact a church
on that reservation. Ask them how to go about it. Be careful, this can become enabling.
  • It is important to keep reminding our political leaders that much need still exists on most reservations.
A great and worthy project to work on is to nag your Senators and Representatives. It is not hard once
you get past that first phone call.
Check the site gwtc.net/~darbob/ it gives good information on a variety of needs for children and adults
living on Pine Ridge.

Donate today to our organization!
Your donation is tax deductible.
